WaterBear is the first interactive streaming platform dedicated to the future of our planet. The challenge was both simple and complex. How could WaterBear drive greater impact?

My Role

As UX Design Lead I developed, user tested and refined the experience towards activism and awareness of its charity partners.

Results

Nominated for a Webby 2024 Award in the Best Streaming Service category. One of five nominations alongside Apple Music and Spotify Web Player.

Problem

Analysing interviews, surveys and usage data highlighted some key problems:

  • A siloed experience and unused features
  • No consistent categorisation which leads to poor discovery, search results and filtering
  • No personalisation to reward or support returning users

78% – Have never been to a Partner Page

62% – Not aware of actions you can take on the platform

I developed 3 persona mindsets from existing user research to contextualise use needs, goals and steer my design choices.

Research

My role involved conducting research through analytics and user interviews to define a product strategy and improve the platform experience for partners and customers.

I carried out research using one-to-one interviews and unmoderated surveys built with Maze. Research artefacts included wireframes to test multiple value propositions and a card sorting exercise to inform the basis of categorisation and navigation.

Insights

Collating responses interviews and surveys I was able to understand users' key motivations to use the platform. It also validated the need for a new taxonomy to organise content and themes across WaterBear.

Insights from user research helped align stakeholders on changes that would deliver the most impact

  • Design patterns to drive impact (share, donate, sign petition, volunteer)
  • Better content discovery and navigation
  • Tracking to power continuous improvement and content recommendations
  • A joined up journey between watching content and the creators/charities responsible
  • A design system library that works across devices and screen resolutions

Highlights

  • Helped Waterbear transistion to a new tech stack for faster development and rapid iteration
  • Through user testing I helped define a new taxonomy to tag all content types and power content recommendations, better navigation and search
  • Working with a Design Lead we created a design system and component library to evlove across mobile, web and tv
  • Redesigned the experience around active not passive engagement
